4 DEVILS – HELL AND HIGH WATER
A play in six acts presented by The Regent Theatre and Gippsland Regional Arts, written by Lily Hibberd
Directed by Darren McCubbin
Thursday 24 April 7.30pm

"4 Devils" was screened on the opening night of the Regent Theatre, on 18 June 1930. This 1929 F.W. Murnau film is famous today because it all prints have been lost. In a one-night live show performed by local residents, some the key characters behind two of Yarram's picture theatres come back from the past in an attempt to restage the lost film.

TWIN CINEMA: 4 Devils and a Woman in Red

An exhibition about cinema stories, resilience and memory recovery in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. Movie theatres in the Valley's industrial towns have long been the focus of community life, yet since the early 1980s many of its local cinemas have been lost to 'progress'. For over a year, I have collected memories and memorabilia in the Valley, and these are displayed in the exhibition. Local communities have shared memories: the people of the former SEC town of Yallourn and those who stayed through the 2014 coal mine fire crisis in Morwell.

The role of cinema stories and the power of memory to resist loss and to hold people together runs through this exhibition. Archival photos of the lost Yallourn Theatre and the former Morwell City Hall auditoriums are recreated in the gallery, enlarged to cinema screen size. The exhibition also features extensive local memorabilia and a replica original 1939 projector from Yallourn Theatre has been reconstructed by local projectionist Peter Ricketts.
